Still another manifestation of the new awareness of older people is the formation of organizations for elderly homosexuals. One such group, Senior Action in A gay Environment (SAGE), was established in New York City in 1978 and now oversees a nationwide network of local community groups. Like more traditional senior citizens’ groups, SAGE sponsors workshops, classes, dances, and food deliveries to the homebound. At the same time, SAGE must deal with special concerns. Many gay couples find that nursing homes won’t allow them to share a room. In addition, nearly 90 percent of gay seniors today have no children, and more than two-thirds live alonetwice the percentage of heterosexual seniors. It’s not surprising that SAGE has surfaced to deal with these large scale special needs (R. Bragg 1999; SAGE 1999).
