The ASEAN Members are now working hard to foster regional identity and ASEAN awareness among their people through education. In response to this policy, schools and higher education institutes have incorporated knowledge about ASEAN into their syllabus. In most cases, students will be introduced to the culture of the member countries such as their national dresses, national foods, national language, geographical facts, along with each country’s greeting expressions. Visits to schools and universities in Thailand will lead one to see at minimum a notice board displaying information and pictures of ASEAN countries. To what extent are Thai students aware of ASEAN and their culture? The question is raised and substantially responded to by a survey carried out by Thompson and Thianthai in 2007 (Thomson and Thianthai, 2007). Their 574 study, which was conducted on over 2000 tertiary students across ten ASEAN Member Countries, reveals a rather positive attitudes and awareness among the students under study. For Thai students, the results disclose their largely positive attitudes towards the Association. Their knowledge and enthusiasm for the regional integration are not outstanding, particularly when compared to Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. In short, Thai students in their survey are neither unknowledgeable, nor strongly enthusiastic about ASEAN; they fell in between.
