TPO Concert August 19-20, 2016 - Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky
For its upcoming concerts on August 19 and 20 at Prince Mahidol Hall, the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) will welcome young Thai piano soloist Anant Changwaiwit and guest conductor Alfonso Scarano for performances of works by two giants of Russian music, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Igor Stravinsky. After an outstanding performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the TPO last year, Changwaiwit returns to the stage this year to perform Tchaikovsky’s famous Piano Concerto No. 1. One of Tchaikovsky’s most popular pieces, the Piano Concerto No. 1 features stunning technical displays, deep emotions, and soaring, memorable melodies. The TPO will also perform Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien, which was inspired by the composer’s trip to Rome with his brother. A rousing fantasy for orchestra, the Capriccio Italien is rhythmic, danceable music based on tunes that Tchaikovsky heard while walking the streets of Italy.
The program will then conclude with perhaps the most famous piece of modern orchestral music, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Stravinsky based this provocative music on a vision of the rebirth of nature after the cold of winter, the warmth of the sun and the renewal of human life. Interestingly, the music does not portray a serene beginning to spring, but rather evokes nature’s sudden, forceful changes with passionate Russian folk tunes and exhilarating rhythms. When asked what he loved most in Russia, Stravinsky replied, “The violent Russian spring that seemed to begin in an hour and was like the whole earth cracking. That was the most wonderful event of every year of my childhood”.
Don't Miss! This August 19 at 7 p.m. and August 20 at 4 p.m. See you all at Prince Mahidol Hall, Mahidol University Salaya.
