State-owned media representatives have been given the green light to break Myanmar's Union Election Commission (UEC) ban on filming and taking photos inside polling booths.
Election commissioner Nyi Nyi Min for Loikaw Township, Kayah State, on November 6 said: "The media has to avoid entering polling booths, apart from state-owned media. Government media must release the news about the election and must temporarily visit the polling booths. For example, they will take documentary photos of polling booths. Other media must stay outside," Nyi Nyi Min said.
The UEC said only domestic and foreign media carrying media identity cards were allowed to take photos or video in the polling compounds but not the booths. Voters could keep their cell phones with them but they were not allowed to use them in the booths.
