California and Florida produce some pomelo according to state level
sources. The University of Florida’s Tropical Research and Education Center reports that
there are less than five acres of pomelo in the state. A 2002 report by the University of
California indicated that pomelo producers’ costs and returns were a net -$261.00, which
likely explains why a 2008 report by the California Department of Agriculture indicated that
the number of fruit bearing acres in the state had declined by nearly 10 percent over the
previous three years to 1,757 acres. More detailed data on pomelo is recorded but it is
commingled with grapefruit, which is produced and traded in much greater quantities than
pomelo. The Hawaiian NASS Office provided an unofficial estimate for this report that
fewer than five acres in the state are allocated to growing pomelo
