Introduction and description of the problem
Part of the Ulstein Group, Ulstein Verft AS (hereafter referred to as Ulstein Verft) has grown up to a worldwide, leading company in design and building of special-purpose ships. Construction processes are organized in projects, which requires high degree of management, technical knowledge and utilization of sophisticated equipment (Ulstein Group). The shipyard participates in MAROFF (Maritime business and offshore operations) Lean Shipbuilding research and development program, which is part of the Research Council of Norway. With the collaboration of Fafo (from Norwegian: Forskningsstiftelsen Fafo) and Møreforsking (Møre Research Center) on research of implementation of Lean Shipbuilding, a unique production system called Ulstein Production System has been developed, which focuses on planning methodology.
