Abstract—The paper presents different aspects of driving thepermanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The excitationin the PMSM motor is provided owing to permanent magnetinstead of the field windings. Special construction causes that the PMSM motor has sinusoidal back EMF. The motor requiressinusoidal stator currents to produce constant torque. The paperpresents mathematical analysis of the motor operation (d, q model) that serves as the base to develop several options of thedriver design. The elements of the field oriented control (FOC) technique are present. The paper includes also short review of the different central processing units, in which the FOC can be implemented.
