Second grade teacher Ally Dubois also uses Inductive Learning to help her young learners develop the crucial skills of comparing, classi- fying, and drawing conclusions. As part of a unit on communities, Ally helps her students
• Imagine a walk through their community, during which students draw at least five things they would see there.
• Compare their pictures with other students’ pictures and with a set of pictures Ally has collected.
• Group and label the pictures based on how students think different pictures go together.
• Draw three conclusions about communities based on their group- ings of the pictures.
• Turn their conclusions about communities into a brief paragraph describing a community.
• Evaluate their work using a simple rubric and discuss new ideas for grouping and labeling that they can apply to the next Inductive Learning lesson.
