When we were asked to deal with the strategy for goat farming in the 21st century, our first position was to refuse this proposal due to the very large variety ofsituations linked to goat farmer objectives, and environmental,social and economical conditions.
Indeed even if one person has worked for the goat sector for a long time, he/she cannot be in a position to be deeply aware of all these situations around the world and make proposals for the development of goat farming in the 21st century.
However, on reflection we have changed our mind, because the goat sector is very short of analyses on its future in comparison to the other animal production sectors, and this in spite of some previous attempts in specific systems of goat production or in limited geographic areas (Devendra, 2001a,b;Boyazoglu and Morand-Fehr, 2001; Haenlein, 2001;
Morand-Fehr and Boyazoglu, 1999; Morand-Fehr et al., 2003).
We thought that this proposal is an opportunity to collect information and thoughts from IGA members interested in this topic.
This paper is the result of work within this group of IGA. Of course, it has no claim to be extensive, but it wants to be a
contribution to progress in the choice of strategies to develop goat farming further in the 21st century.
First, we shall propose to analyse the present situation of goat farming and its evolution during the last 20 years, to give proposals that explain the prominent features of the goat sector at the outset of the 21st century.
Then we shall suggest some possibilities to develop goat farming in various situations, and we shall mention the conditions for an efficient development of goat farming, and in particular the future role of experts and national or international institutions involved in the goat sector.
