. In our zero-waste model, off-quality or excess agri
cultural products are diverted to an energy production system where
the carbohydrates and other nutrients are scavenged by microorgan-
isms (e.g., algae including C. protothecoides) and converted to high
value products, such as oil for biodiesel production and high protein an-
imal feeds. Agricultural producers benefit from an additional revenue
stream for off-grade or overripe products, and the local economy addi-
tionally benefits from locally produced and diversified sources of biofuel
and animal feed.
