In this study, parents of children with asthma
identified areas for improvement in coordination of care
for their children with asthma. Parental needs include
educational resources, particularly around disease
education. Parents identified asthma action plans as helpful
tools in chronic care management. Conflicting opinions are
an identified barrier to care coordination. Future studies are
needed to evaluate the perspectives of parents in other
healthcare settings. In addition, longitudinal study, tracing
parents and patients through the complex healthcare
system over time, would yield further insight into the
barriers and facilitators of chronic asthma care and help
inform refinement of asthma care pathways. Coordination
of asthma health services should aim to reduce conflicting
opinions and improve parent-provider partnership for
chronic care. Communication and caregiver education need
to be incorporated into health system improvement efforts
for improving outcomes for children with asthma and as
part of overall efforts to increase the child- and familycenteredness
of care.
