KHIH was KUVO's main competitor. To music purists, the comparison was weak: KHIH played a bastardization of the classics— jazz themes electrified and "pop influ¬enced." Many dedicated classic jazz aficionados scoffed at KHIH. Yet, for those who didn't know the difference between classic jazz and its newer mutations, KUVO was viewed as the maverick. Predictions on the genre's radio future were divided, but the bottom line was that jazz was hard to sell. However, jazz audiences were loyal listen¬ers and generous supporters.
