DISCUSSION This study confirms previous findings of varietal variation in susceptibility to chilling injury in pineapples (Wilson Wijeratnam et al., 1993).
Higher overall total calcium concentrations were observed in the chill resistant Kew variety. A negative correlation was observed between symptoms of the disorder and locations in the fruit with low calcium concentrations. Chaplin and Scott (1980) also observed that chilling injury in avocados was more serious at the distal end of the fruit where there was less calcium than at the proximal end. Non-uniform distribution of calcium within apple fruit has been reported by Yuen (1994).
