Beliefs About Medicines Questionnaire. The Beliefs
About Medicines Questionnaire (BMQ) is the most common
and well-validated tool. It is based on the assumption that
patients’ attitudes toward medications affect their adherence.
Validated for use in schizophrenia and numerous other
conditions, it has been translated for worldwide use. BMQ is
an 11-item questionnaire with two scales: (1) a 5-item Necessity
Scale assessing perceived personal need for medication
and (2) a 6-item Concerns Scale appraising concerns about
potential adverse effects (e.g., dependence).
