When the concentrations of the gas phase were desired, compounds
were applied to bananas in the gas phase by pipetting an ether solution of the compound onto filter paper to increase the
surface area in a 3 L jar and then left for 24 h to allow the compounds
to evaporate and diffuse to the binding site. Jars were then
vented and ethylene was injected and allowed to stand for a minimum
of 15 h, after which they were vented and then allowed to
stand at 23
C until ethylene responses developed. Unless otherwise
indicated, 333 LL
◦
−1
of ethylene was used to test the bananas
for sensitivity to ethylene after exposure to the inhibitors.
