Several bacteria belonging to different
genera like Gluconacetobacter, Sarcina and Agrobacterium are
able to produce a unique form of cellulose designated
as bacterial cellulose, or biocellulose (BC) [2]. Recently, Gluconacetobacter
sacchari was identified as a very efficient BC producer
[3]. Since these bacteria are aerobic, under oxygen
limiting conditions, like static medium, the production of BC
takes place in the liquidegas interface in the form of a highly
swollen membrane.
