A qualitative research technique, in the form of individual interviews,
was utilized among consumers and farmers. An explorative research
design was chosen as little was known about this area and because of its
ability to provide detailed, personal perspectives on CSA.
An interview guide was prepared that required certain types of information on CSA to be discussed during each session, although the order
and phrasing of questions varied between interviews (Denzin, 1989). The
questions relevant to this article are listed in the Appendix. The key
topics that pertain to this paper are outlined in Table 1. During the interview, before specific questions on CSA were asked, the interviewer read
a definition of CSA and an outline of key points about CSA was provided
for the interviewee to read. The definition provided was: “CommunitySupported Agriculture involves a local farmer selling produce direct to
consumers. Members usually pay in advance for a season’s worth of fresh
vegetables and fruit. Costs vary depending on how it has been set up.
Farmers are guaranteed a reliable market and income, while members
receive freshly picked, seasonal, high-quality, often organic food
