The objective of Bike Sharing System
Bike-sharing is a model of cost-effectiveness both for users and cities.
Using bike share to commute is cheaper than public transit for system
members. It is also relatively inexpensive for a city to implement; a wellrun
system can actually be cash-positive instead of requiring large
subsidies. The bottom line is bike share can often move more people at a
lower cost and with many more positive benefits to health and environment
than other modes.
The reasons people use bike-share vary considerably. Some who
would otherwise use their own bicycle have concerns about theft or
vandalism, parking or storage, and maintenance requirements. However,
with limits on the number of places where bicycles can be rented or
returned, the service resembles public transit, and has therefore been
criticized as less convenient than a privately owned bicycle used door-todoor
