The Maryland HotSpot Communities Initiative is a simple but powerful crime fighting strategy to make communities safe in Maryland. National studies indicate that crime is heavily concentrated in particular geographic neighborhoods, a phenomenon that holds true in urban, suburban and rural settings.
Under the Initiative, 35 HotSpot Communities, selected by local leaders receive more than $10.5 million over three years for new police officers, probation agents, nuisance abatement teams, after school activities, citizen patrols and other proven enforcement and prevention strategies. This model will allocate funds for 4 hotspots in Prince Georges County: Palmer Park, Glassmanor, Suitland and Mt. Rainier. The money will be distributed for 2 core elements: Nuisance Abatement and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design,
