Strain MUSC 135T exhibited a broad-spectrum bacteriocin,
inhibiting growth of three pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus
ATCC BAA-44 (MRSA) (inhibition zone 10.5 mm),
Salmonella typhi ATCC 19430T (4 mm) and Aeromonas
hydrophila ATCC 7966T (4 mm). Notably, the inhibition
zone against MRSA (10.5 mm) was larger than that of
the positive control, a vancomycin disc (30 mg), which
exhibited an inhibition zone of 9 mm (Fig. S1, available
with the online Supplementary Material). Strain MUSC
135T displayed strong inhibitory activities against these
pathogens compared with all the bioactive isolates detected
in the antimicrobial screening programme (data not
shown), suggesting that strain MUSC 135T could be a
candidate for the production of valuable antimicrobial
metabolites.
