Many of the solutions used for cleaning, such as chlorhexidine gluconate and stericol are unsuitable for routine environmental cleaning. Others are more properly used for specialist decontamination, for example chlorine releasing agents such as Domestos are necessary for decontaminating spillages of blood, but may be damaging to certain equipment and should not be used routinely. It is neither necessary nor desirable to use disinfectants for routine cleaning. Detergent and hot water is adequate.
