Of the principle sprain mechanisms, inversion is the most frequent [33], [34], [35], [36] and [37]: it occurs by catching the lateral edge of the forefoot or a fall on the lateral edge of the forefoot, which first solicits the cervical ligament (lateral talocalcaneal ligament) and the talofibular ligament as well as sometimes the bifurcate ligament in extreme instances of torsion [38], [39] and [40].
