decade,’’ Macau received over 17 million visitor arrivals in
2004, an increase of over 40% compared to 2003 (Jahns,
2005; Schuman, 2005). This blistering increase in Macau’s
tourism is mainly attributed to the expansion of its casino
sector, which has generated spillover growth in tourism
and the development of casino resorts and hotels. Mainland
China has remained Macau’s largest source market,
accounting for 60% of all visitors, since the Chinese
government relaxed travel restrictions for its citizens under
the Individual Visitor Scheme in July 2003 (Jahns, 2005).
With this phenomenal tourism growth, Macau faces the
challenge of attracting more high-end tourists from other
countries, and not just from China (Honegger, 2005).
