According to the sushruta samhita,during the first month of pregnancy only a gelatinous substance is formed in the womb. This information, as well as much of the other information provided by sushruta in this text, is corroborated by medical science. Sushruta states that approximately six or seven days after conception, the new organism embeds itself in the lining of the uterus. In about the seventh week the embryo assumes a recognizable form. He goes on to say that in the second month the embryo takes a shape that is either lumplike,in the case of a male child, or elongated, which indicates a female child. According to medical science, the limbs appear as tiny buds on the embryo when it is less than a month old, and the heart starts beating a few day before the end of the first month. In summit is during the seventh week the end of the second month of pregnancy that the human embryo assumes recognizable form. by this time the brain has already been formed, with the capability of coordinating the other organs of the body through electrical impulses. Growth during this period id rapid but irregular. The skeleton begins to develop after the forty sixth to forty-eighth day, which means that the body of the pregnant woman needs more calcium and other minerals. During this time proper massage of the back and aboriginal region is necessary, and the expectant mother should relax and only engage in light housework. She should also practice deep-breathing exercises and meditation when-ever possible. Massage enhances circulation and help to purify the blood. Deep-breathing exercises and pranayama,combined with massage, provide vitality as well as the oxygen and antibodies required for the immune system of the child. massage should continue up to the beginning of the labor pain. during labor the expectant mother should be given massage for relaxation to reduce fear and the tensions and blockages produced by fear. the laboring woman may be massaged on the shoulders and neck to reduce the tension felt in giving birth. this area should be treated more gently than before labor pains began. on the other hand, her back,waist,and pelvis can be massaged more deeply than was advised after the fourth month and before the onset of labor. the leg and calves should not be massaged during labor
