Experiment 1 was performed in an aquariumfacility using 5 pairs of
120 L water tanks containing 100 L of aerated seawater each (25 ppt)
maintained at ~28 °C. Each pair of tanks was connected by tubes
through a small submersible pump that allowed water exchange between
the tanks at a flow rate of ~100 L h−1. A polypropylene filter
bag (100 μm mesh size) was attached to the outlet of each tube to prevent
particulatematter N100 μmfrombeing transferred between tanks.
Tank water levels and salinity were monitored and maintained by
adding fresh seawater as required.
