Indonesia is located between the Australian and Asian continental mainland and divides the Pacific and Indian Oceans at the Equator. It is an archipelago composed of some13,670 islands, of which more than 7,000 are uninhabited. There are five main islands in Indonesia. These are: Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Irian Jaya. Almost 95percent of the people live on those main islands. The peak tourist season, but not necessarily the best time to visit, is between mid-June and mid-September and again over the Christmas and New Year season. This is particularly relevant in the major resorts, where prices rocket and rooms can be fully booked for days, and sometimes weeks, on end.
