People can become marginalised for socio-economic reasons; typically the poor are the victims. One might debate whether marginality results from poverty or vice versa. Simply being different in some way from the dominant social group can result in marginalisation. Living near the margin makes people vulnerable to physical and socio-economic setbacks. Modern societies have tended to degrade traditional coping strategies, exacerbating things. Marginalisation and vulnerability are complex and diverse processes which some have tried to understand and manage through a political economy approach (Blaikie, 1985).
