Conclusion
Nursing faculty frequently tell students that they are ‘‘the next generation of nursing leaders,’’ yet aside from the 1 course on leadership in most undergraduate programs, attention is almost exclusively focused on acquiring clinical skills. Employers of newly licensed nurses are likewise focused on clinical skill acquisition and may neglect to include the time and support needed to help new nurses acquire the leadership skills they will need to be successful clinicians and team members. The nursing profession can no longer afford to use this laissez faire approach to leader development if it is to fulfill the potential described in the IOM report.2
