of the EPLT level, Faith described the strategy she had invented during the clinical
interview activity to complete some of the tasks. Her method involved dealing seven
wholes to reduce the problem to sharing three wholes and then relied on a benchmark half
(Confrey 2012) to complete the task:
I couldn’t get a visual of what seven looked like. So, I thought if I got an even
number it would help. So I cut it [the three remaining wholes] in half, but then I was
still stuck with the seven, and it was killing me! … I left the seven whole and I took
the last 3 and cut them into fourteen pieces and then gave each person six of those.
Faith’s comments reflect her use of Specialized Content Knowledge to invent a strategy
for reducing complex sharing problems through using several domains of mathematical
knowledge, including evens and odds and multiplication.
