Loretta's teaching strategy includes art and guided play as she implements the class project on faces. She offers the children materials that can spark exploration, interaction, and interest. By posing questions, Loretta leads the children from exploration of the materials to achievement curricular objectives such as developing language and of conceptual understanding of facial features and placement. While meeting curricular objectives in a playful way, the project allows children to choose interesting materials that guide their creations. Art play is explorative, constructive, and flexible. Art play that incorporates guided play is similar to the art process described in the Reggio Emilia literature(Malaguzzi& Musatti 1996).
