The most important aspect of understanding amenity is to
understand that the amenity of a beach depends on the
perception of the beach user. This perception of amenity means
that how a beach is managed for amenity purposes is driven by
beach users; therefore it is important to understand (1) who
uses the beach and for what purposes, (2) how often different
users use the beach, (3) users’ perceptions of the beach and how
it is managed, and (4) what services users need/desire (Breton
et al., 1996). The ultimate importance of gaining this
understanding of individual beach users’ perceptions is to
implement particular beach-management strategies that are
appropriate to a specific location (Phillips and House, 2009).
