An electrophilic species is generated through the Lewis acid behaviour of the Grignard reagent. This converts the trialkoxymethane into a reactive oxonium ion, which is effectively an ester alkylated on oxygen. The Gringnard reagent adds to this species to give an acetal, a protected aldehyde. The free aldehyde is liberated by hydrolysis in asubsequent step.
