Although carbon oxidation phenomena require specific oxygen consumptions in the range of 10–20 Nm3/tonne, it is understood that some more oxygen will be required for the rest of the oxidation (i.e., oxidation of Si, P, Mn, etc., that provide extra heat into the EAF). A homemade thermodynamics tool, developed into an Excel spreadsheet and capable of performing mass and energy balance11– 13 computations for the EAF and the pre-heater, is used for decision making. In this work, it was used in order to deduce the effects of PCR and pre-heater oxygen upon the entry scrap temperature and energy savings, or specific energy consumption.
