“My children didn’t have a chance, did they?”
“What’s this?” Adam asked, pointing to another envelope.
Sam handed it to him. “I want you to take this to the front
gate, and I want you to find the leader of those Klansmen, and I
want you to read it to him. Tell the cameras to film it, so people
know what it says.”
“What does it say?”
“I ask them all to go home. To leave me alone, so that I can die
in peace. It tells them that I am no longer am ember of the Ku
Klux Klan.”
“I’m not so sure it’s a good idea right now, Sam.”
“Why not?”
“Because as we speak, we’re telling the Fifth Circuit that
you’re basically a vegetable, incapable of putting together
thoughts like these.”
