Grade 8 Mathematics
The Grade 8 Mathematics program focuses on introducing the students to the concepts of numbers, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability. It enables the students to learn algebraic skills, spatial reasoning and problem solving skills. It also emphasizes the use of mathematics in real life. The course highlights the importance of mathematical investigations in problem solving. The major topics covered in this class are: transformations & fractals, real numbers, exponents and radicals, triangles, histograms, quartiles, standard deviation, combination, probability, factoring, equations in one and two variable, graph of lines and inequalities, area and volume of solids. To evaluate the students’ performance in math class we use a variety of assessment strategies such as exams, projects, performance tasks, group work and formative assessments.
Grade 9 Mathematics
In Grade 9 class, we focus on the development of logical thinking, algebraic and problem-solving skills which enable the students to acquire the basic skills needed to succeed in future math classes. We involve the students in solving problems related to their daily life which helps them to improve their critical thinking skills and make connections. The major topics covered in this course are: logic, sets, relations and functions, and number systems (exponents, radicals, modular arithmetic, binary operations, equations and inequalities). In this class students use graphing calculators which enables them to acquire new ideas, adapt to change, to perceive patterns, and solve problems. Graphing calculators are used extensively to enhance the understanding of realistic applications through mathematical modeling and to help them in the investigation and study of functions. In this class students are evaluated using a variety of assessment methods such as exams, quizzes, and performance tasks.
