Next to this, ICEs have the interesting advantage of
being fuel-flexible: they can be set up to allow the
combustion of different fuels within the same engine.
Inevitably this leads to compromises in the engine design,
but having the option of switching to another fuel is a
distinct benefit, especially for introducing a new fuel such
as hydrogen into the market. It is also advantageous as this
enables the continued use of the vast engine manufacturing
infrastructure in place today.
