Oil is insoluble, persistent and toxic due to additives and heavy metals hence can
be a major source of contamination of groundwater if indiscriminately disposed.
Under the Environmental Management and Coordination (Water Quality)
Regulations 2006, the effluent discharge standard for oil and grease is zero since
impacts of oil on drinking water can be devastating. Generally, infrastructural
facilities relating to collection, storage, transportation and recycling have also
been inadequate in absence of clear guidelines.
