Taste detection thresholds were determined using a triangle test with a staircase procedure. After two consecutive correct choices, the concentration of the target stimulus was decreased by one step until an incorrect guess was made. The shift in stimulus concentrations from ascending to descending or descending to ascending was considered a reversal. In addition, participants were not told if they had provided a correct or incorrect response. The detection threshold was calculated as the average of the concentrations of 5 reversals.
