U.S. Forces in (South) Korea (USFK) acknowledged Friday releasing toxic chemicals through the wastewater sewage system earlier this year.
A USFK statement said the forces regret the incident.
"It was determined that a one-time release of formaldehyde in February this year did occur. As a result of the investigation, actions have been put in place to ensure that this type of event will not occur again," the statement said.
It added "at most 20 gallons (about 80 liters) of formaldehyde" were disposed of through the wastewater sewage system at the Yongsan compound.
The statement said the USFK believes the material caused no damage to the environment as it was processed through the waste treatment system.
"Nevertheless, the USFK regrets that this event occurred and will continue to strive to comply with all U.S. and (South Korea) environmental requirements," the statement said.
The statement was in response to a disclosure made Thursday by a South Korean environmental group that the USFK has discharged large quantities of formaldehyde through the drain at the 8th U.S. Army's Yongsan Camp in Seoul.
The environmental group urged the South Korean government to launch a probe into the scope of environmental damage the USFK's dumping toxic chemicals into the Han River, flowing through Seoul, may have caused.
Formaldehyde is a toxic chemical.
According to the USFK internal regulations, formaldehyde should be disposed at a disposal facility at a U.S. military base in Okinawa, Japan, as there is no disposal system in South Korea.
