The aerial part fresh and dry biomass decreased at50 mM NaCl by about 14.162% and 60.450%, respectively. Concen-trations of 100 and 150 mM NaCl reduced plant biomass productionby about 34.826% and 47.558% (fresh biomass) and 65.856% and69.324% (dry biomass), respectively. Similar salt-induced reduc-tion in biomass was reported in other mint species such as Menthapulegium (Queslati et al., 2010) and Mentha piperita (Tabatabaie andNazari, 2007). The significant decrease of plant biomass under saltstress has been attributed to considerable decrease in plant growth,photosynthesis and canopy structure caused essentially by the lowpotential of soil solution, ion toxicities and/or nutritional imbalance(Munns, 2002). According to Maas and Hoffman (1977), a crop canbe categorized as being strongly salt sensitive when 50% of reduc-tion in dry biomass occurs at 60 mM of NaCl. Accordingly, minttimija can be considered as strongly salt sensitive, since a reductionof more than 60% in dry biomass occurred after the application of50 mM NaCl.
