Bioindicators and biomonitors are commonly used in the biomonitoring
studies, including these of aqueous ecosystems. Their
organisms display measurable morphological, anatomic and physiological
changes in response to physical and chemical variations in the
ecosystems they inhabit. Algae became common biomonitors due to
the their abundance in various environmental systems and great
ability of adaptation to environmental conditions. They also constitute
a very good sorption material for metal elements.
