As of Monday, according to new legislation, every climber on Mount Everest has to bring back eight kilograms (17.6 pounds) of garbage to help clean up the 8,848 m (29,029 ft) high peak.
The Everest has become the world’s highest garbage dump and waste left by courageous climbers is seriously threatening the health of neighboring communities. Since 2008, a waste collecting expedition has collected some 15 tonnes of garbage, 600 kg of human waste and six bodies. If you think that a body decomposes at the Everest’s extreme cold, think again.
So next time you think of conquering the world’s highest mountain, make sure you’ve packed some extra garbage bags.
