This plant is a stalkless, very bushy, much branched and spiny plant. It grows in spherical shape and its diameter often exceeds its height. Because Van Lake basin of Eastern Turkey usually consists of soils with high sodium chlorite
rate, this is the weed mostly growing in this region. This is so
common that, in some cases, soda weed seems like intentionally
cultivated particularly in fallow lands as in Fig. 1Mature plants present a wood-like view (Fig. 2). Measurements
indicate that its diameter at the vegetative section can
reach to160 cm or more, and also its dry weight reaches to
3 kg. Towards the end of October, it dries completely and
every part of the plant becomes brittle. The plant breaks at
the soil line and is blown by the wind spreading thousands of
mature seeds with the shock and centrifugal forces wherever
it goes. Then the self-generation process for the next season
starts.
