After the germination and initial growth period during which the
plants use soil-stored water, cost-saving single drip lines with inline
emitter spacing up to 100 cm are installed midway between
alternate pairs of crop rows, spaced at 96 cm, and a large first
irrigation that wets the soil in only one side of the plant at distances
of 48–68 cm between the plant and the emitter is followed
by frequent small irrigations.
