The treatment of projectile problems in many textbooks of physics is very limited and covers only those types of problems which can be easily soluved. In considering the possible application of quaternion multiplication to accelated motion, two equations were obtained which serve to simplify the solution of some types of projectile problems.
One type of problem which is awkward to solve by conventional methods is that for a projectile fired at one elvation ith a given inital velocity and required to strike a target at a different elevation as shown in Fig.1.The information which is given is the magnitude of the initial velocity u,the vector s from the starting point to the ending point, and the acceleration a,usually the acceleration of gravity directed vertically downward. The unknown quantities are the projection angle for the initial velocity ,and the time of flight. For one given initial velocity there are in general two projection angles, two final velocities, and two times of flight to be determined.
