In fact one of the most important niches to emerge does notadvocate any particular technology innovation but rather a par-ticular grid topology. This is the so-called “Design Grid” concept, which also originates from Belgium [88]. This proposes linking onlyNorth Sea electricity trading cables into a massive integrated trad-ing platform. Notably, to reduce costs, these would not be meshedwith offshore wind-farms. Instead, offshore wind would be left todevelop by itself, and would not resolve its intermittency problemvia systematic meshing at sea, although it would benefit indi-rectly by the greater opportunities for balancing and exporting ofelectricity from higher levels of interconnection. Although superfi-cially similar to NSCOGI, the Design Grid niche is actually a rival toNSCOGI because it separates out the ambition to mesh with offshorewind-farms at sea.
