In contrast to the Cooper 1.5-mile run test and the 1-mile walk test, which require an all-out effort, the Modified Canadian Aerobic Fitness Test (mCAFT is a submaximal step test that uses the lowest two 8-inch (20 cm) steps found in a conventional staircase (99) The six-count stepping cadence in this test is main- tained by a CD. Prior to the test, the person completes the PAR-Q+ to determine if he or she should proceed. The original CAFT (99) was modified in 1993 to im- prove its reliability and the test's estimate of VO2 max. especially for fit subjects 13, 114).
