Che was a communist; as such he believed that work was an essential aspect of our humanity. We are active, creative, curious beings who create and recreate ourselves as we engage others and the world around us. In capitalist societies, work is converted into toil that one engages in merely to survive and to have time and money to carry out other activities outside of work time. As Marx (1959) pointed out, alienation is a central characteristic of capitalist societies.
