Intravenous (IV) paracetamol is a treatment option for non-clinical prescribers and triage nurses who administer under patient group directions to ensure rapid and effective pain relief for patients with renal colic. The drug is safe to administer and has few side effects. Care should be taken, however, when administering IV paracetamol to patients with renal impairment, by ensuring six hours pass between doses, or chronic alcohol problems, by ensuring that no more than 3g per day is administered.
