The result is that a greater e.m.f, is induced in one coil than the other and then there is a net output from the two coils. The bigger the displacement the more of the core there is in one coil than the other, thus the difference between the two e.m.f.s increases the greater the displacement of the core. Typically, LVDTs have operating ranges from about +2 mm to +400 mm and are very widely used for monitoring displacements.
